  1. HP's lifecycle for software includes providing extended support
  2. and assuring a long term viable operating environment for the
  3. systems.  Toward this end, the Software Technology Division
  4. (SWT), of the Worldwide Customer Support Operations, is
  5. responsible for  established products.  SWT's charter is to
  6. ensure that installed base customers continue to receive quality
  7. support for software that is in the latter part of its lifecycle.
  8. The division  currently supports MPE V, RTE, Domain and now HP-UX
  9. (Series 300/400) operating systems.

  12. Extended Support for HP Software:
  13.  
  14. HP's Software Technology Division, is focused on providing
  15. investment protection to customers that maintain software support
  16. contracts by:
  17.    . Transitioning software to extended support stage at
  18. the proper point in its lifecycle
  19.    . Providing support - Fixes, enhancement,  and
  20. interoperability for extended period
  21.    . Supporting migration to next generation products
  22. by helping to provide a "bridge" to the future (see
  23. illustration)

  27. Increased  Support for Users of  Domain & HP-UX:
  28.  
  29. HP recognizes the diversity of the Motorola-based workstation
  30. users (technical & industrial), and  is committed to provide
  31. ongoing support and enhancements of the Domain and HP-UX OS
  32. products.

  34. For HP-UX and Domain this means...
  35.    .  Current product engineering (maintenance  of existing
  36. systems, fixes to serious /critical defects, patch
  37. delivery)
  38.    .  Interoperability enhancements (with Series 700,
  39. PA-RISC/HP-UX)
  40.    .  Customer driven enhancements (such as extended
  41. peripheral support)
  42.    .  Improved communication of the availability of
  43. software updates, as well as improved distribution of
  44. those updates
  45.    .  Improved methods to receive and respond to product
  46. requests or suggestions
  47.    .  Specials, where the additional investments for
  48. unique requirements pay off in extended use
  49. of current systems
  50.    .  Migration paths and upgrade programs customers
  51. can use to move to HP open systems over time and at
  52. reasonable cost
  53.    .  Incentives to renew or add support contracts

  56. Domain:
  57.  
  58. In early 1992, SWT assumed responsibility to provide extended
  59. support of the Domain/OS (DN Series & Series 400) through the
  60. year 2000.  This change has been positively received by the
  61. Domain installed base as it provides  support from an
  62. organization that is able to focus on their particular needs.

  64. This past year SWT worked closely with users via customer visits,
  65. surveys, letters, phone calls, and through involvement with users
  66. groups (InterWorks, HPWorks, and InterWorks-Japan) to identify
  67. and implement necessary enhancements. As a result, a release 
  68. will be available in July 1993.

  74. Some of the key enhancements are:
  75.    1.  X11R5 run-time environment
  76.    2.  Motif 1.2 run-time
  77.    3.  hpterm 1.3
  78.    4.  User Environment Development Kit
  79.    5.  Domain patch process improvements

  82. HP-UX for Series 300/400:
  83.  
  84. HP has moved responsibility for support of Motorola-based 68000
  85. HP-UX (Series 300 & 400) to SWT.  As in the case of Domain, this
  86. transition will enable the installed base to drive their needs
  87. with an organization dedicated to focus on those needs.  SWT has
  88. successfully provided focused, customer-driven support for other
  89. operating systems to allow users to extend the value of their
  90. existing investments.  This experience is transferable to HP-UX.
  91.  
  92. The HP-UX  operating system (Series 300 & 400) will be supported
  93. through the year 2000.
  94. SWT will provide the same program for support as with Domain.

  96. SWT will work with the Domain and HP-UX installed base to provide
  97. support which will allow users to maintain, mix (interoperate),
  98. or migrate their OS investment.  The needs of Series 300/400
  99. installed base customers which include a more stable environment,
  100. will be addressed.  Some specific functionality for Series
  101. 300/400 HP-UX that is viewed as critical to system
  102. interoperability and migration will be provided.
